I have done quite a bit of photography work recently for a fantastic charity called Rays of Sunshine who grant wishes to seriously ill children. This can be anything from becoming a fireman for the day to going to the theatre or meeting a favourite celebrity.

Last week I photographed the wish of Michelle, a girl from Northern Ireland whose obsessed with Amy Childs, star of British television show The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE). The team at Rays Of Sunshine had arranged for Amy to give her a full ‘Essex’ makeover at her Brentwood salon followed by a slap up lunch and ride around London in a limo to see the sights. I was on hand to document the whole process and provide Michelle with photo memories of the once in a lifetime event that she could cherish.

Massive thanks to Amy and the staff at her salon who were incredibly generous with their time and made the experience truly unforgettable for Michelle.

I’ve just completed work doing all the photography post-production on a large-scale campaign that has just launched across Brazil’s third largest city Recife. The campaign was created by planners including my good friend Dylan Viner at JWT in conjunction with the Brazilian agency Melhor. The aim of the campaign is to encourage employees to grant opportunities to adolescents who have formerly been homeless or impoverished and was undertaken in conjunction with the charity OPN. The advertisements below will appear in a number of different forms in all forms of media, driving people to a Facebook page created for the NGO, where people can learn more about the project, have their questions answered, and ultimately schedule interviews for the adolescents. I have included a translation of the copy under each ad.

I HAVE THE ABILITIES. YOU JUST DON’T WANT TO SEE THEM. Edson, like all the adolescents on Projecto Gente Grande, has the ability, training and motivation to make a positive contribution to your business. Now, all he needs is the chance to prove it. He’s ready. Are you?

WE HAVE THE ABILITIES. WE JUST NEED THE OPPORTUNITIES . Alexandre, like all the adolescents on Projecto Gente Grande, has the ability, training and motivation to make a positive contribution to your business. Now, all he needs is the chance to prove it. He’s ready. Are you?

I HAVE THE ABILITIES. DON’T THROW THEM DOWN THE DRAIN Brena, like all the adolescents on Projecto Gente Grande, has the ability, training and motivation to make a positive contribution to your business. Now, all she needs is the chance to prove it. She’s ready. Are you?

I HAVE THE ABILITIES. AND I WAS ABLE TO SHOW THEM. Many other adolescents also have them. They just need an opportunity. Felipe, like all the adolescents on Projecto Gente Grande, has the ability, training and motivation to make a positive contribution to your business. The only difference is that he was given the chance to prove it.

The adverts will also appear on outdoor billboards, in business magazines, in high-end bathrooms and in major transport hubs. Some examples of these are shown below.

Being asked to photograph from the roof on Buckingham Palace in London is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities for a photographer. I therefore needed no second invitation when being commissioned by Sport Relief to to shoot the “Sport Relief Mile” straight down the Mall and also capture the sensational and panoramic views of London last weekend.

I arrived early at the Palace on a gorgeous, crisp March morning with the Spring sun illuminating the facade of the famous John Nash designed facade in a golden light. After passing through a number of levels of security, I was accompanied by a pretty surly looking policeman through some of the empty State Rooms (quite the experience when they are empty) before ascending an increasingly windy staircase up to the roof. Once opening the hatch and clambering onto the roof, I realized that I was standing under perhaps the most famous flagpole in the world. Coincidentally, when I looked up at the flagpole the Union Jack flag was flying proudly at full mast to indicate that her Majesty was indeed home, residing somewhere below me.

The Sport Relief Mile is an event that happens every two years to raise money to help children across Africa. The event had over 20,000 runners taking part, both serious and amateur, with people completing the mile from everything including scuba suits, space hoppers and pantomime horses; it is the culmination of a whole year of fundraising in which the charity has already raised in excess of 50million pounds with the help of some extraordinary endurance challenges by celebrities including David Walliams, Helen Skelton and John Bishop.

I wanted to create a signature panoramic photograph to commemorate the grandeur of the event and demonstrate the majestic views. Therefore, I positioned my cameras right in the centre of the palace roof (dead above the famous balcony) with my usual set up for a panoramic photograph and began systematically working my way through the scene with my camera from left to right. Below is the result which is a composite of forty photographs stitched together. Now all I need is a royal seal of approval!

A panoramic photograph showing the unbelievable views from the roof of the palace!

The flag at Buckingham Palace at full mast indicating that the Queen was home.

With the recent changes to Facebook, I got commissioned by Ocado, the leading online grocery stores in the UK to create a banner photograph to use within the new timeline format. The brief was to showcase some new designs and liveries on the sides of Ocado’s delivery trucks, lorries and vans. After having to postpone the shoot due to bad weather a couple of times, we eventually managed to get into their massive parking lot at their delivery facility to shoot.

Maneuvering these huge vehicles into position was going to be a challenge, and with relatively limited space we had to figure out how to best position everything bearing in mind the eventual panoramic format in which the photo would be used. However, I needn’t have worried; I was amazed at how well the drivers were able to move around these huge trucks. In fact, they made me realize how bad a reverse parallel parker I am in my little VW Gulf!!

Therefore, using the large trucks as a backdrop, a couple of the drivers positioned the smaller vans into a fan shape creating a dynamic frame that showcased all sides of the colourful liveries. It was then just a case of waiting for the sun to come out and voila! The result is below:

Photographing 30 St Mary Axe, affectionately known as “The Gherkin” due to its unusual shape, is something I’ve been wanting to do ever since returning to London last Summer. The iconic 180m tall skyscraper in the heart of the City of London was designed by Sir Norman Foster and has recently become Britain’s most expensive office building after recently being purchased for a staggering £630million.

Rather than just shooting the building with a wide-angle lens and capturing conventional architectural photographs, I wanted to do something a little bit more creative. Therefore, I set myself a challenge of only using my 50mm 1.4 prime lens on my full frame camera. The abstract nature of the building makes capturing reflections relatively easy and it was fun to play around with different compositions as twilight approached.

Last week, I spent some time on assignment on board the H.M.S Diamond, one of the Royal Navy’s air defence destroyers.

At one point the crew performed a fire drill to demonstrate how they would extinguish a blaze while at sea. Unlike a fire crew on land, Royal Navy firefighters cannot just stand back, be patient and hose a fire allowing it to settle. Instead, they must be far more aggressive, tackling it head on and appease it as fast as possible in fear of damage being caused to the ships body that could subsequently cause it to sink. The guys therefore got suited in heavy-duty fire retardant suits, oxygen masks, hoses and some other nifty gadgets. The smoke machines were then fired up and the strobe lighting turned on within an enclosed cabin on the warship to recreate the chaos of a fire on board; this was a photographer’s dream!!

Due to limits on space and time, I couldn’t set up any extensive lighting so had to rely on strobes as I frantically worked around the crew as they ran through their drills and exercises. Below are just a few of many photographs:

On my recent trip to New York, I was recommended by a friend who knows I’m a fan of urban art to take the subway out to Long Island City to check out 5Ptz. The 200,000 square foot complex consists of a graffiti covered warehouse, adjacent garages and railway lines and is widely regarded as the global epicentre of the aerosol-based art. The name of the colourful outdoor art space derives from the coming together of the five boroughs and on arrival, I was blown away by the quality and vivacity of the murals. Therefore, despite temperatures being well below freezing, I spent a number of hours admiring the walls and enjoying a couple of hours out of the city. Below are some of my favourite shots:
